Subtitled “non-religious thoughts on Christian spirituality,” this book consists of Miller’s musings on Christian teachings and ideas. It is entertaining and even helpful in understanding how people approach the Christian faith and wrestle with its ideas. This book is being widely read on college campuses and so I would recommend that pastors, youth pastors, and college ministry leaders read it. However, I hesitate recommending it to everyone and here is my concern: in a postmodern culture where Truth is rejected, absolute Truth is anathema, and only personal experience can be trusted, Miller’s acceptance of “Christian spirituality” seems firmly grounded, not in Biblical teaching or orthodox theology, but in pragmatism, experience, and personally formulated logic. This only leads readers further away from developing a reasoned defense of the faith that is rooted in Biblical truth. Truth seems to be reduced to “what makes sense to me” and “what works for me,” and this is not the Biblical standard for how to define or accept Truth. Read this book because it will reveal how others wrestle with truth but don’t read it as a tutorial on how you should wrestle with Truth.
