MEMORIES OF A DIRT ROAD TOWN

By  Stephen Bly

Review by Laura V. Hilton

Develyn Worrell is a fifth grade Indiana school teacher, divorced and later widowed, with one twenty-year-old daughter, Delaney. Delaney isn’t talking to her mother because she is blaming her father’s fatal heart attack on Develyn.

With her summer empty, Develyn decides to revisit her past, the only place that has ever given her peace—a small town in Wyoming. But Develyn doesn’t remember the name of the town. In spite of her best friend’s misgivings, Develyn heads west. As soon as she arrives in Wyoming, a cowboy invites her to a wild horse auction. Develyn refuses, hoping to find the town she’s hunting, even though she still doesn’t remember the name.

In a series of bizarre events, Develyn does find her town, and oddly enough, it is the same place where the wild horse auction is taking place. With three cowboys pursuing her, can Develyn still find the peace she remembers as well as mend the relationship with her daughter?

MEMORIES OF A DIRT ROAD TOWN is rather a quirky read. Develyn is a lovable character, but for a forty-five year old school teacher, she acted lost, young, and irresponsible. She seemed to have an unusual ability to make “best friends” easily, from waitresses in a twenty-four hour café to barrel racers at a rodeo. Some of the events that took place seemed rather contrived, but in spite of these . . . or maybe because of these . . . the book is adorable and easy to read.

MEMORIES OF A DIRT ROAD TOWN is the first book in the Horse Dreams series. Readers will not want to miss it, and will be anxiously waiting for book two in the series. It made me want to drive out to Wyoming and find my own dirt road town to make memories in. $12.99. 276 pages.
